Day 6-The things I notice.

Here is the next installment of my Five Minute Free Writes Challenge

Earlier in this series I wrote about those things I enjoy listening to when my body is in rhythm with the world in the early morning hours. I really enjoy those mornings.

Then there are mornings like today. Yesterday was hard, sharing my “other” blog was not what I would have chosen but what God put on my heart to share. I felt vulnerable and naked yesterday. Sharing my story is hard but necessary in order for God to use it for good. (Gen 50:20). Also I over ate yesterday, my stomach woke me up in the middle of the night because of acid indigestion. Feeling like I was having an emotional hangover, I slept in. I love that my sweet husband knows that if I am still in bed, after he wakes up, I need to be there and he quietly goes about his morning routine.

The first thing I noticed, as the sleep was leaving my body, were the sounds. It was cool last night so the window was open. No birds, no crickets, no little creatures at all. All I heard were the thunder and rain gently rolling outside. It had been raining and thundering all night and that fresh morning rain smell filled my nostrils.

I slowly opened my eyes, lifted my wrist to a position where I could actually read the time on my FitBit and I noticed it was rather late! 9:06 to be exact. I sighed and thought “Guess I needed the rest.” I lay there quietly as my body woke up.

But then I smelled something unpleasant, what was that odor? Not quite what you would expect coming from the bathroom, after someone finished their business, but oh so pungent. Smelling this odor totally took away my desire to stay in bed. I gently removed the sheet and blanket, swung my legs off the bed and there, under my feet, was the source of the odor. Our very wet, rather frightened 15 year old rescue dog, Tokay! Thunder scares him so much! Usually he acts more like a cat and rarely sticks close to me. He is affectionate on his terms and I can only imagine what his life was like before he was put in the animal shelter and then a rescue at the age of 8. Waiting 4 long years for a new forever family. Oh well, I digress! Back to my morning!! Wet dog is not a pleasant odor to notice when said dog is way past bath time. When my feet landed, gently on his back, he got startled and ran to his bed, to his “house” because that is where he feels safest.

Stepping out of bed I am reminded of back issues and that, perhaps, having Indian food late last night was probably not a good idea. My stomach still hurt!!

I take my shower and get dressed.

Once fully awake I realized it would be better to take my focus off what I notice about me and turn my focus on the things I notice that I am so very grateful for.

Here’s my list for today:

  • Another day to shine my light in the world.
  • Our warm home that holds more than enough for us.
  • My sweet husband, Bill, who is my best friend and greatest cheer leader
  • Our rescue pup, Tokay
  • Our four chickens that provide eggs for us.
  • The much needed soaking rain
  • A peace, deep inside my soul, that surpasses all understanding.
  • My God that created me and did so with attention to every detail.
  • The ability to read God’s Word and receive wisdom and understanding from Him.

All this, and much more, is what I noticed this morning as I woke up….how about you?

What did you notice and what are you grateful for today?

I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart;
    before the gods I sing your praise;
I bow down toward your holy temple
    and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things
    your name and your word.
On the day I called, you answered me;
    my strength of soul you increased.
Psalm 138:1-3(ESV)
